As I laid my head down to sleep at 11pm, I planned to get a good night’s rest before the Straits Times run the next day. Although it’s just a 5km run, I haven’t really been running at all since I was pregnant with Jy i.e, 2 and a half years ago, so I needed all the energy I could get. Plus, I’ll be running with my ‘runner’ colleagues, so I’d better not embarrass myself.

At around midnight, Didi started screaming in his room. He couldn’t possibly be hungry, so I left him with Robbie, who was sleeping in his room. But his cries didn’t subside after 15 minutes, so I went in and nursed him to sleep.

An hour later, Didi was crying again. Again, I didn’t intervene until after 15 minutes. Didi had a lot of phelgm stuck in his nose and vomited up the milk he drank. By this time, I told Robbie, I’m not coming back into his room anymore, because he’s not hungry! He just wants to suckle and be comforted, which Rob can handle with the pacifier.

At about 3am, Didi was at it again. This time round, I was just so fed up. I stormed into the room and picked Didi up. Then, I realised how hot he was. And he’d been waking up because he felt so uncomfortable with the phelgm in his throat and nose and the high fever taking over his body.

I carried Didi into the Master bedroom and woke Ks (he wasn’t actually asleep either). We decided then to bring him to the A&E.

At the hospital; the staff nurse was horrified at how loud Didi was wheezing.
‘Look at my boy! So loud!!’, she exclaimed as we brought him in to the observation room.

His heart rate and oxygen levels were checked while the paediatrician came to take a look at him. She ordered the nebulisers and oxygen on him as his heart rate was peaking at 130 bpm and oxygen level on borderline low at 90 percent.

We did several rounds of this until Didi was completely exhausted from the crying. He was sobbing and falling asleep in Ks’ arms. I tried to nurse him but he had so much difficulty breathing and drinking at the same time, we had to stop after one minute.
Just enough to relieve the engorgement.

At about 7am, we were transferred to our B class ward (no available rooms in A class). Our ward houses all the respiratory cases, so it was just as well.

I was wheeled to the ward with Didi in my arms! IMG_4772

This was our bed. It’s actually a giant cot.

It could fit Didi and myself quite comfortably.
After the series of events in the wee hours of the morning, all three of us ended up squeezing in this pad for a short rest.

Let me hear ya!
